Courses
Middlesex County in conjunction with local leagues run umpiring courses
during the year. Middlesex County arranges testing.
Please note that before any candidate
can apply for a test, they must have attended a C-Award course within
the last two years (this came into effect from September 2004).

Qualification
levels
The minimum level for divisions 1-4 is a C-Award. Division 5 does not
require a qualified umpire, although umpires are required to have attended
an umpiring course.
All umpires and trainee umpires MUST be affiliated to
AENA/County, and their affiliation number MUST be entered
on the match result card.

Testing
Umpire
testing usually takes place on Saturdays at Broomfield Park. There is
a waiting list for testing so please contact Kathy Newman if you would
like to apply for your test. If you are prepared to travel to another
site to be tested please let Kathy know.
We will be adding a downloadable application form soon.
You are required to umpire
a Division 4 match, followed by a Yes/No 20 question theory paper (pass
requirement 17/20).
Some sample test questions (answers below):
1) If a player enters an offside area should the penalty awarded be a
penalty Pass or Shot?
2) May a player throw
the ball while lying on the ground?
3) At a Centre Pass,
if one player enters the Centre Third before the whistle is blown, should
a penalty Pass be awarded to the opposing team where the infringement
occurred?
4) May a player jump,
catch the ball in the air and land on both feet simultaneously, then move
either foot to gain balance?
(Answers: 1 No, 2 No, 3 No, 4 Yes)

Umpires' guidance
notes
• Umpires should
have a current AENA rule book.
•
Umpires should have
read and understood the League
rules (Word file)
• Umpires must arrive on court before the start of the game. Failure
to do so result in 2 points deducted from their team's points.
• All players' (including substitutes) fingernails must be checked
before the match. Rule 1.4.5 states 'Fingernails must be short and smooth'.
• No jewellery is allowed - this includes all body piercing with
the exception of a wedding ring or a medical talisman(which must be covered).
A suggestion for covering a wedding ring is to cut the fingers off old
rubber gloves and tape this over the ring.
• All players must wear their correct club colours.
